Look inside our workshop
An old timber shed in Zaandam, with a six-metre workbench, a spray booth and a stock of wood up to the ceiling. You are welcome to come and look, on Saturday mornings by appointment.
The shed
Where the planks from the sawmills used to dry, we now make staircases and cabinets. The shed is eighteen metres long. The machines are at the front: a panel saw, a thicknesser and a CNC router for the stair strings. At the back it is quiet, that is where the handwork happens.

The team
There are four of us. Small enough to know every customer by name, big enough to fit a staircase in a day.
- Willem: 35 years a carpenter, does the joints and the fitting
- Jesse: furniture maker and designer, draws everything in 3D
- Sander: all-round carpenter, with us for ten years
- Noor: apprentice furniture maker in her third year

Tools
Willem still sharpens his chisels every Monday morning, on a water stone he was given by his father. At the other end of the shed the CNC routes the stair strings to a tenth of a millimetre. Old and new stand side by side here, and we need both.

Woods we use
We only work with solid wood from sustainably managed forests, with FSC or PEFC certification. Below are the woods we use most, with the finishes customers choose most often.
- Natural oiled#C19A6B
- Smoked#7A5A3C
- White oiled#E0CFB1
Oak
The wood we use most. Hard, stable and beautifully grained. For staircases, floors and cabinets.
- Natural#DCC9A3
- Black stained#2E2A26
Ash
Lighter and slightly busier in grain than oak. Tough and springy, lovely for handrails and tables.
- Oiled#5C3F2C
- Lightly oiled#8A6446
Walnut
Dark, warm and precious. For fronts, tops and details that are meant to stand out.
- Natural#E3CFAE
- Painted Zaan green#2F5A3F
Accoya
Treated pine that hardly moves with moisture. For front doors, window frames and wooden facades.
- Oiled#B98A55
- Lye-treated#E6D6BB
Reclaimed pine
From demolished Zaan houses, often a hundred years old. For repairing old floors and beams.
